The
Laon Protestant Evangelic Church is
a part of the federation of the “Assemblies
of God, France”, the principal
expression of the Pentecostal movement
in France, currently the most important
Protestant denomination across the
world.
Reformation
origins
We
trace our roots to the Protestant
reforms of the 16th century and different
awakening movements amongst Protestants
and Evangelists. We have faith in
the event of the first Pentecost which
took place in Jerusalem around the
year 34AD as described in the Acts
of Apostles, chapter 2 verses 1 to
13 (the Bible).
In
France, this movement significantly
grew from January 1930 with the arrival
of the English Evangelist Douglas
Scott (1900-1967) in Le Havre. This
preacher was at the heart of a spiritual
revival in our country. Numerous churches
were created, several of which are
in Picardie : Saint–Quentin,
Amiens, Abbeville, Beauvais…
Our
history
For
3 years, Christians inhabitants of
Sissonne and its surrounding neighbourhoods,
as well as from the Church of Reims,
met in a house for bible studies under
the direction of the pastor Dominique
Moureau.
It
quickly became necessary to establish
a meeting place, this happening in
1991 as Christians met in a room on
the ‘Rue de Verdun’ for
several years.
Because
more and more Christians were coming
from Laon, meetings also took place
in a local room rented for this purpose
on the ‘Rue Jean Moulin’
in Laon, near ‘Boulevard Pierre
Brossolette’ (Autumn 2002).
In
January 2006 the centre at Sissonne
was relinquished and all the meetings
instead took place in Laon.
The
core grew by the arrival of Christians
from different horizons and the room
quickly became too small. A much bigger
centre is scheduled to open in February
2007, but as the lease of the room
on rue Jean Moulin finished in October
2006, we were without home for 3 months.
In
the meantime, the Reformed Protestants
had the kindness to lend us the Temple
which we shared with the Baptist Church
one Sunday in two.
Since
March 2007 you can find us in a room
which we rent at 63 rue de Crécy.
The
work continues
The
succession of pastors :
Jean-Jacques
Mancier (1991-1994)
Matthieu Paton (1995– 1996)
Denis
Biava (1997-2006).
Today, the Laon Protestant Evangelical
Church is lead by the Pastor Philippe
Calabria with Denis Biava (since appointed
at St Quentin) becoming president
of the project.
This
church currently numbers about 50
members and sympathisers. It is governed
judicially in cultural association
by the law of 1905.
The
Laon Protestant Evangelical Church
fosters relationships of fraternity
and respect with Christians of other
churches in Laon and the wider region.
